If you need some wholesomeness in your life, this is worth picking up! Loved reading about this deaf football team that faced adversity and went on to win a championship, but not without their ups and downs. Thomas Fuller does a great job of profiling and highlighting each of the main players and the coaches. He traces their origin stories as well as the origins of the California School for the Deaf. It's all done in a very endearing and engaging way and really makes you fall in love with this team. He also reports on activism for the deaf community, including whether or not to teach ASL in schools, whether or not ASL should be considered speech, and the controversy about cochlear implants. There's a great argument made that the boys' deafness is not a hindrance to their performance, but that their deafness is even an asset. This is definitely a football book, so a lot of emphasis is made on the various games, positions, and plays. For someone not as versed in football, this could be hard to follow. Really enjoyed the audio - thought Fuller was a great narrator and listening to the football sections felt like listening to a football game on the radio.

This was a wonderfully written story about a deaf football team in California. There’s quite a bit of information on the deaf and hard of hearing communities that I found fascination and incredibly important. I just wish that the story had focused a tad more on the boys themselves outside of their football games.

Very interesting book about deafness just don’t expect it to be interesting about football.
