This one surprised me. Great world building, magic, fantasy, pirates, conflict, what more could someone want from a read. The writing, full of interesting characters and vivid imagery, kept me turning the digital pages. Great job by Noyes, and I look forward to reading the next installment of this series. Amare is a main character full of inner turmoil and hope for the future that one would expect from this type of work, yet she feels a bit different than just the typical young heroine. The supporting characters, both above and below the sea, are full of life and are fleshed out nicely.

3.5 rounding up because my main complaint is that it's a bit immature, but it is a YA book. Plot was enjoyable, will continue the series. Better suited for YAs.
This book was a surprise for me! I wish I was the "don't judge a book by it's cover" girlie, but I am not , nevertheless I started reading it because I am interested in the pirate YA books especially with cool FMCs. I feel like the experience of reading this book was like peeling a (pleasant) onion. You think it's one thing, and then you peel a layer and there is something new and unexpected to love.
I loved the 1700s pirate world and then loved the modernish sereia world and the sunken city and the world building explanation.
I got very strong TVD vibes from the two brothers and I am not too mad about it. It was different enough but familiar enough for me to appreciate having a piece of my fave comfort show in a new element.
The writing was so unexpectedly good, I felt like I was immersed into the world.
The only thing I didn't like was the use of Greek words for magic spells. I *understand* why it was used, but the author *could* have made up words. To me it was a small problem because it threw me out of the narrative very unexpectedly the three times it happened. All in all I am very excited to read the other two books of the trilogy.

1.5 ⭐️’s DNF 36% The main character was so annoying I had to put the book down.
Amare was orphaned as a baby and raised by pirates. She must learn the hard way how to fend for herself; a pirate ship is no place for a girl. Until one day she comes across a sunken treasure that turns her world upside down. From the very beginning the story is mesmerizing. The Sunken City is everything I look for in a book set at sea: pirates, adventure, morally gray characters. I don't think I should say more to convince you, but I really enjoyed this book.

I stayed up until 3AM to finish this book, needlessly to say I love this novel! The story was beautifully written. It follows Amare and her time onboard the pirate ship Moonshadow and how she ended up at The Sunken City, a city that's 267 feet below sea level. During her adventure, she encounters pirates, witches, vicious sea creatures, and of course sereias(sea people). Don't worry, there's plenty of romance too. If you're a fan of YA fantasy with pirates, under water adventure, and magic, you'll love this novel.
The novel does end on a cliffhanger... so, I'm going to need that second book, like, right now!
***I would like to thank BookSirens and Emma V.R. Noyes (the author) for graciously providing a copy of the novel for me to read & review.***
