I read this as a child, didn't really get it, came back to it in my thirties and it looks completely different. There are so many different threads of narrative and motif and everything is connected to everything else in such intricate ways that it barely makes sense because everything makes too much sense and you're trying to comprehend it all. An absolutely genius piece of literature.

I am sitting on this ending. The main review I would give is DWJ is NOT afraid to talk about some heavy shit children endure. Polly’s neglect in her home was hard to bear, and conversely Tom Lynn’s attention felt that much more necessary and gratifying. It knows it’s complicated, which I like. And Polly has some very good thoughts on gender that child me would have clung to. Overall, a great recommend - just don’t expect, say, Howl’s Moving Castle or even Charmed Life.
