I had high hopes for this because I really liked This Is Going To Hurt but I didn't enjoy this one as much. It's quite a wide-ranging memoir which jumps around in his life and I didn't find it very cohesive, possibly because I listened to the audiobook. I also don't know if my sense of humour has changed or if this book had a different tone but I just didn't find it as funny as This Is Going To Hurt. The tone does shift from light to dark a lot and it includes some very heavy topics. I was expecting some of them but I wish I'd checked the content warnings beforehand to be a bit more prepared.

- Please read the trigger warnings before reading -

This book is vulnerable, witty, startling, and necessary. Adam Kay and his acerbic style of writing take you through an vulnerable journey of the doctor who ran out of patients. Kay details the PTSD he battled with following his years as a doctor; he's stuggle to adjust to life post medicine including the difficulty in establishing himself as a comedic writer; and Kay explains the pressures and challenges posed to his relationships with loved ones both during and after leaving medicine from the toll medicine takes to his family and there Outlook on why he left medicine.

This book was jarring, it was hilarious, and it was so deeply personal. It takes a brave individual to bare themselves to the world as Kay has done and he has achieved it with wit, humour, and kindness to himself showing a level of introspection many lack.

Adam Kay is an incredible storyteller. If you or anyone you know has ever worked in healthcare, you must read his books. This is his most personal, and it's all the more impactful for it.

This man is honestly so funny, the footnotes have me howling. Did make me cry at the end though.
