I loved Adam Kay’s first book and the promotional material suggested this would be similar, other funny stories of life before and after medicine.

However this book is very different to the first and quite a difficult read. There are a lot of painful and harrowing stories and I found it very difficult to read.

Definitely don’t recommend it if you’re not feeling good mentally as you will struggle to put it down but the stories will stick with you.

Somehow funnier and more sad than This is Going to Hurt. I liked hearing more about Adam.

I loved ' This is going to Hurt' the book and more recently the BBC1 drama series and this felt like a prequel and a sequel to that. As there were stories from Medical school and his time as a doctor and how he adapted to leaving and the success of the first book. It had some funny anecdotes and had Adams humour throughout it but this felt in some ways a lot more personal. The story of his Eating Disorder, the miscarriage of his child, his grandparents dementia and his rape it was heartbreaking to read at some points. However, it is also so important as him opening up will hopefully help so many others and give those the courage to hopefully speak up. I liked how it told stories throughout the different time frames and how some were funny stories yet others were tragic which I really wasn't expecting.

The bonus lockdown diaries at the end had me laughing out loud. It was a very reflective account of Kay's life with a lot of the inward looking which was different to his previous, comedic writing style but was still really enjoyable
