A beautiful book that I enjoyed every moment of.

There is a lot to unpack here. This is not a how-to or primer on anti-racism or feminism, but instead a collection of papers, letters, and interview that would be part of the syllabus on feminist theory or women's studies. More digestible than a textbook, but needing months to discuss and digest.

These chapters really humbled me and challenged me where I am today. Will need to revisit in the future.

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde
5/5🌟

These essays & speeches guided my Black feminist education in college, and I was really excited to read them over again. Through these troubling times, I highly recommend the following: Poetry is not a Luxury, The Masters Tools Will Never Dismantle The Masters House, and The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism.

My favorite essay was Eye to Eye: Black Women, Hatred, and Anger. Lorde states “Every Black woman in america has survived several lifetimes of hatred…We had to metabolize such hatred that our cells have learned to live upon it because we had to, or die of it” (page 156). In this essay Lorde explores the relationships between Black women, colorism, and the impact of ongoing hostility and oppression.

so many goosebumps
so many revelations
so much time lived without this book.
why did no one put this in my hands long ago?

Full of anger and lyricism; the essays, especially "Eye to Eye," really pull you in with their style. In addition to that essay, I especially liked the pieces on Russia and Granada, as well as the conversation with Adrienne Rich. I want to read more Lorde now!

A book consists of essays and speeches from a revolutionary intersection feminist, Audre Lorde, describes the struggle of black women as well as minorities (racial/economical) in a capitalist society where they have been used as experimental tools to create income and social inequality by rich and powerful. This book is still relevant today as much as the time it was released many many years ago. A must read to understand the importance of intersectional feminism and why it is important to listen to the frustrations of minorities in American society. More "Sister Outsider" less "Lean in"
