Told in fitful glimpses, Democracy is an enigmatic story of an American woman, Inez Victor, moving in a world of politicians and the wealthy elite. Told against the backdrop of the withdrawal from Vietnam, it hinges around the senseless murder of Inez’s sister and another politician by their disturbed father. Didion writes in a spare, sometimes repetitious reporting style, creating the sense of real events while also reminding us that it is a “novel”.

Alright agreed this is her best fiction. What an interesting woman to be writing so much about the failures of American interventionism via the dissociating upper crust women who land in wartorn countries and don’t leave. Can’t even call her odd I feel like I get her now.
