I absolutely devoured this book. I don’t know when i was last hooked in the first chapter, but this book had a death grip on me immediately. It gave me strong FBAA vibes, but in the best way. It’s everything I wanted from FBAA but with far better dialogue.

A big mix for this series and how the author writes.

There is no major world build.  Some things are rushed, and others drawn out when it comes to details/world information.

The spicy sex scenes are..meh.  there's a lot of them, but honestly I began to skim as most of them felt repetitive  and lacking any reason or attachment.  Also I think that Isodel would need to be a contortist.

The flashbacks are handled with poor writing technique- several times I needed to go back and reread as there was no transition into or out of the flashbacks.  Also not enough is given about Adrian's curse.  Also, in the 2nd book why is his perspective given on like 5 chapters?

I don't understand why a 26 year old woman would need to slap her partner, thru a hissy fit and then hope he comes around to apologise to her with sex?

I'm curious what will happen in the story, but the series will likely be a DNF for me.

The plot was a little weak but I loved the romance.

This book was SO GOOD!! I love the main characters. For once, I think I actually love the MMC more than the FMC. She is really complex and struggles internally throughout the book, so naturally there were times when I was really frustrated with her or felt she made dumb choices. Whereas the MMC is deliciously villainous with hints that he’s really a good guy at heart.

The story has tons of character development but also a strong plot. There’s great foreshadowing throughout that kept me wondering and waiting. I did figure out the big twist before the FMC did, but I think that was by design. There is still a lot that has been hinted at but not revealed, so I’m eager to continue on with the second book and see where it takes the story.

I love the relationship between the two main characters. It’s difficult and complicated, which makes it more realistic. This story has the strong feeling of found family, which will hopefully develop further in the next book.

There’s tons of action and adventure, intrigue, mystery, and danger. It’s fast paced, but still makes time to build up the characters and help you fall in love with them. There’s a unique magic system that I still don’t fully understand after just this first book.

I definitely recommend this book to romantasy lovers.

Key Tropes:
💍 Forced/Arranged Marriage
👫 Enemies-to-Lovers
🪢 Found Family
☠️ Touch Her and Die
💪 Strong FMC
🛟 Protective MMC

Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book might hands down be my favorite book by SSC. Adrian? I absolutely adored him from the start. There was truly never a moment where I didn’t absolutely love this man and everything that came out of his mouth. If there’s one thing Scarlett can do, it’s write a lovable male MC.

Isolde on the other hand was a character I had to warm up to. I loved that she was strong and stabby (is that a word) but I hated how completely stubborn she had been for so long in her beliefs about the world around her and how uncompromising she seemed for a while to change those opinions. I hated even more how much she hated Adrian or tried to hate him (though that’s probably because I loved him so much.) Though, nothing pleased me more than seeing her finally realize that things weren’t quite what they seemed and accepting the truths of her feelings for Adrian and the world she live in.

As far as that plot twist goes…I hate to say that I called it about halfway through the book. Maybe from the first few chapters. Despite having had an idea of how this would play out, I did absolutely enjoy seeing Isolde finally coming to the realization herself. The build up to it was nice and it kept me on edge, even though I figured it out beforehand. Scarlett kept it interesting and I liked that.

I cannot wait to see where Adrian and Isolde’s story goes from here and I look forward to seeing how Scarlett takes us back to their past and how it coincides with their future.
