Gosh I am such a sucker for Titanic Books ! I truly love the Titanic and her story! This one got me good! Because even though I was listening along and realizing all those subtle hints at the problems, there was part of me thinking... maybe it won't sink this time because I am not ready to give up these characters! Truly what an example of found family! I just really loved it!!
Told through the eyes of a young stowaway aboard the ill-fated Titanic, 'Iceberg' presents the tragic account of the ship in a well-balanced and interesting narrative. While I found the plot to be a bit uneventful and some what lacking in development at the beginning of the book, the suspense soon moves in allowing for more action and involvement for the reader. The characters are diverse in their qualities which helps to add flavor to the storyline. The protagonist, Hazel Rothbury, can seem a bit repetitious in her careless actions, however, which seem to make her more immature than the plot tries to have her appear. Although the writing could have been a bit better in its descriptions and overall flow, I am pleased with the clean delivery of this novel. I did enjoy this story and learned a lot more than I expected about the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic. I can fully recommend this thrilling story to readers of all ages.

This book is not for me. I could see some of my Nathan Hale, I Survived, American Girl kids getting into it. The plot is pretty much exactly what you expect and if you are an 8 or 9 year old without an ounce of cynicism in your bones you'd probably enjoy. As an adult, the main character is too plucky and precocious and the scenario seems laughably impossible and happy...but if I could suspend my disbelief and see this from a kids point of view, It would be a fun read for them.
All the main and supporting characters are made up for the purposes of the story. All the people who were really on Titanic are cameos, at best. The main character interacts with Thomas Andrews, at one point, but he never introduces himself because it was after they hit the iceberg and that poor man is almost out of his head at what's going on. I would have preferred this Titanic story to either be a little closer to the truth or have larger roles for the people who were really there, even if it's fictionalized.

Wow! Jennifer Nielsen never fails to amaze me with her exquisite writing. This story is told from the perspective of a girl named Hazel as she journeys to New York on the Titanic. I love that there is more of a story told than just the boat sinking. It is so incredible to open your mind to the reality that these people lived lives like everyone else. It isn’t just about how they died, but how they lived! I highly recommend reading this extraordinary novel!
