What a great collection of stories. I enjoyed them all, and really loved most of them. In an interview about Bojack, Raphael Bob-Waksberg talked about liking to experiment with different ways to tell stories, particularly through framing devices. There was a lot of that in this book. For instance, there was a story told about a relationship told through the eyes of one of the lovers’ dogs. Another story was told through a poem. Another was framed through a dinner party card game. Another through a “missed connection” draft. I think Raphael’s incredible use of these devices is one of the things that makes his storytelling unique. There was a lot of that Bojack absurdism and outrageousness in these stories too, but like Bojack, that didn’t stop the characters from feeling real and the stories from feeling grounded and emotionally charged. This is an amazing piece of work!

Picked this up because of Bojack Horseman. It started off pretty strong. But I was a little disappointed by some of the stories. It could’ve been better. But either way, T’was a fun read!

Had high hopes for this because Bojack Horseman is one of my favorite shows. It exceeded expectations.

The variety of stories made it super entertaining - but it was more than obvious that they were interconnected in the best way. It’s hyperrealism at its finest - similar to Bojack, each story was funny and weird but hit home on some major existential themes. One of my favorite reads of the year for sure.

Heartwrenching and beautiful in its realness! Rufus was one of my favorite chapters. Along with You Want to Know What Plays Are Like? the poem, the Average of All Possible Things, and Move across the country. Very quirky refreshing perspective to take on. I found myself having a moment where the description of step siblings on vacation was so poignant and complete, I thought of the image’s months later and for a while, assumed it was a tv show I had seen. For stationary geeks like me, this has an incredible cardstock and textured cover.
