This was my first cult-themed read, and I’m not sure I picked the right one.

Firstly, I disliked every character in this book. And that’s not always a dealbreaker—I’ve enjoyed books with unlikable characters before—as long as I can connect with them on some level. But here, I couldn’t. They were all incredibly irritating. The husband was useless, the daughter was a pain, and only the second wife seemed to have any common sense. The main character, Kate, felt like a cardboard cutout. Despite being the focus of the story, she lacked any meaningful backstory or development, which made it hard to empathize with her.

What initially drew me in was the premise—it sounded like a gripping psychological thriller. But instead of something intense and layered, the story gave… well, nothing. The first half was passable, but it quickly became messy and confusing. I didn’t feel anything—no suspense, no excitement, no curiosity. It just kind of existed.

And the ending? Easily the biggest joke of the book.

Overall, I wouldn’t say this is unreadable, but if this is your first cult read, you may want to start with something else.

A full 5 star read for me ⭐️

If you’re into cults or culty vibes, this Berry book is for you. Now, this book made me realize that I have zero interest in cults or any desire to learn more and that’s okay. I found this book emotional in all the right ways, it was so easy to get lost inside of it and the characters in the book were just so easy to picture, experience & even grow to LOVE. That being said, the end of this book got me right where it hurts and those last two words of the book? Yes, if you know, you know because GOOOOOOSEBUMPS.

Check TW as always & enjoy

I read this because I’ve been hearing consistent praise about the author’s writing and style - turns out it maybe isn’t my cup of tea.

This story was EXTREMELY slow and was difficult for me to stay engaged in. The dialogue given to the characters is so clunky and the sheer volume of exposition was exhausting. The ending could not have been more predictable. But maybe I’ve just seen too many episodes of Criminal Minds.
