This book was a huge letdown. The start was very interesting and even by the 50% mark, I was very locked into the story.
The twist and ending was so flat and lackluster; it didn’t even make sense whatsoever. SUPER bad twist.

This was SO good, but also so incredibly heartbreaking. I also have some thoughts that I need to vent…
First of all, Scott. How Meredith did not up and leave him immediately after Kate came back, I do not know. He didn’t even ask her if she was ok and any time she expressed any concern or emotion at his ex-wife coming back, he was so cold and just lacked any empathy what-so-ever. His revelations at the end that he should have listened to Meredith all along were infuriating. Meredith had completely sensible and logical concerns and yet Scott repeatedly acted like it was totally normal to sneak downstairs for a nightly phone call to an unknown and slam the receiver down if anyone approached… the mind actually boggles.
Then, there’s Abbi. Just as delusional as her father, but understandably so and I found her storyline the most heartbreaking of all. Her mother, who she believed was dead, returns and it seems that their maternal bond survived the years of separation. Abbi is so desperate to connect with her mother and that makes her incredibly vulnerable. I will say, she seems to have some serious sway in her household and I did find it a bit weird that it is almost what she says go in the family.. I’m not sure my own mum would have allowed dynamic in our family when I was sixteen!
And then there’s Kate… the anger I feel. Let me preface this by saying, I know grooming is a very real thing and people do get manipulated into cults, etc. BUT what do you mean you’re going back to him? He tried to smother your baby; he killed multiple people; he was violent towards EVERY ONE. And, for most of Kate’s POV, she told us that he physically repulsed her. Then, she arranges for them to kidnap her own daughter as a trade so she can go back?? She is the actual devil.
Overall, I did really enjoy this one. I couldn’t put it down and I was actually sad when it ended!
