When She Returned

Lucinda Berry

3.78 AVERAGE

3.5-3.75 stars

SUMMARY: woman goes missing from grocery store parking lot and comes back 11 years later with a new baby. She looks like she’s been held captive the entire time (she’s in bad shape with blatant trauma) but come to find out she had actually been in a cult, the very one she had did an expose on prior to her disappearance. (The cult has been ruled out by police when she went missing).

The book alternates between “now”— the days after she returns, which is primarily told from her 16yo daughters POV as she gets to know her mom and baby sister, plus a few chapters with the POV of the new wife who is extremely skeptical about the situation.

The other timeline is from the missing lady’s POV—from when she first met the cult leader on her work assignment, her 11 years with them, and then her escape/now.

I will say the author did different things with this somewhat common story and the book is a quick read. Not a ton of twists imho, but that doesn’t work against the book.
You’re reading for the story more than how it shakes out or connects.

That said, I’m not sure I would have finished without the narration. One of the narrators Is a personal fave. A good kindle unlimited option, if you’re a member.

Crazy intense. Loved being in the mind of the main character as she essentially loses grip with reality. Exhilarating and read in one day!

amazing read!

I started reading this at work just to pass time and boy I’m glad I did! It’s been in my library for probably a year or so. If you want a thriller, this will take you on one for sure!

I never add this but thought it might be a good idea.
TW: abuse, assault, kidnapping, murder.
