Cults are one of those things that freak me out beyond belief. I knew this book was going to creep me out. There definitely was a few plot holes, but overall this was super engaging.

I have really thoroughly enjoyed the last two books by Lucinda Berry I've read, but this one was not as impressive or compelling. I liked the subject matter, but felt there could be more done with the plot and the ending. Not bad but just not my favorite after I have read a couple other really excellent books by this author.

I totally understand the vastly different reviews on this book. I relate to both the good and the bad reviews.

This book gets a high rating from me though because it was entertaining and I was taking my kindle everywhere to finish it.

Where it loses a star is that it wasn’t very “thrilling.” I was just reading about a woman being brainwashed by a cult. Interesting or not, it doesn’t fit the thriller genre in my opinion.

I’ve also noticed that LB’s books usually don’t have a wrapped up ending, which is starting to bother me. This is my 4th book by her and I’m always left wanting more. The book reads as if there’s going to be this crazy built up and then it’s just nothing..

-kinda slow
-the cult stuff was creepy sometimes
-abner is an UGLY name
-the ending was way too rushed
-i felt for meredith and she was lowkey always right
-dean kinda gave me bad vibes near the end
-the plot twist was very underwhelming i needed more psychological twists
-still a good book that i kept reading to see if the ending was good

the ending felt a bit rushed, i wish there was more closure. however, i enjoyed the different point of views from the family. it was interesting to see kate’s past and why she is the way she is, it is astonishing to see that even after the torture she endured she wanted to go back. i felt bad for meredith since she was just trying to voice her troubles and was dismissed by both scott and abbi. it did turn out that her concerns were valid, but the fbi already had a hand on it, making her look crazy. i wasn’t blown away by the plot twist, where abbi was kidnapped, but i thought that it was still interesting. i was definety expecting more from a thriller. i was interested in the plot and invested to see what would happen next.

I really liked the story but I needed more of an ending. I felt like it just kind of cut off and left so many questions unanswered. It was clearly an interesting story because I wanted to know more but parts of it just felt rushed.
