This is the second book I have read from this author. When I first saw this book I wanted to read it. Thus I was very excited when I got the chance to pick up a copy of this book. Frey and Rafi could not be more different. However, they are bonded by the fact that they are twins. Frey really is the star of this book. She does not belong in the royal world; thus the reason that she was discovered fairly quickly. She is better as an assassin. Rafi may be the face but she also had a soft and likable side. When was nice as I grew close to both sisters.
Yes, there is romance budding between Frey and Col. It did not seem forced or childish. In fact, I was happy to see that Frey got the guy. This book had a good storyline. It kept my interest. The ending made me happy. There is nothing worse then to read a book only to end up with a weak ending. Fans of young adult books will enjoy this one.

A fantastic read. I've read Uglies, but not in quite a long time, and I still was able to follow this perfectly. I'm very eager to know what happens next! I'll have to watch out for the next one, hopefully not too long from now.
Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way.
He takes my right hand. Something electric goes through those knitted bones. "Don't apologize, Rafi. And don't worry. I'll make sure Jefa keeps her promise."
He touches his lips to my hand. Just for a moment.
"J'en mettrais ma main au feu," he says.
I'm staring at my hand, at his lips.
The cyrano translates in my ear - I put my hand in the fire.
What do they mean, those words? That kiss? Is this how they seal promises in Victoria? Or is it the start of something else?
I don't know anything about kissing.
His dark eyes lock with mine. No one looks at me this intently, except Naya, when she's sizing up my weaknesses. I feel measured, scanned, defenceless.
Then Col lets go and turns towards the hallway.
"We should get back to the party," he says.
I nod dumbly. Suddenly that swirl of music, fire, and projectiles seems safer than being alone with him.

Good, worth reading to get to the second one, cause that is even better

I am so frustrated! I really enjoyed the uglies series as a teen and I was so into the beginning of the book and then it drags in the middle for most of the page count only to drop something finally interesting at the very end! I could have really gone without a the middle part. The character drama is far better than the action.

I’m a huge fan of the uglies series and was very excited to start this series. I like that Tally is mention, but is not a character herself. It’s enough of a call back/tie in the the previous series while allowing this series to stand on its own. I love his writing style. The author’s creativity and world building really keep the story new and fresh. It’s not just another cliche YA book. I did not love the ending, but I thought it fit pretty well. While I would have liked things to wrap up nicely, that’s not how these books go and that wouldn’t have left room for the rest of the books in the series. I’m easily awaiting the release of the next book.
I've always loved this world that Westerfield has created. I should have read the Uglies series again before starting this. This book had me hooked from the very beginning and I can't wait for the other ones to be released!
I had big expectations for this book, and it lived up to them. Excellent update to the Uglies-verse that continues to ask relevant questions about things present in our society: surveillance, celebrity culture, propaganda, war, and of course, identity. Always identity with these books.
And my #1 wish came true! Queerness exists in this universe now!
tl;dr, I just physically screamed aloud at the end of this book. Pure adventure and delight.

It's not about Tally Youngblood. She won't save us.
Yay! A new series, set in the dystopian future of the Pretties series! Frey, a young woman trained all her life to be the defender and expendable pawn for her sister, Rafi, is our protagonist. I like the scrappy Frey, and look forward to her continuing struggles to win free of the poisonous influence of her horrible father.
