This was exactly what I needed to launch me back into reading. A throwback from my past, it was wonderful falling back into the world I loved so much a decade ago. Extremely excited to read the next 3 books!

Update: I read this again 2 years later after doing a reread of the Uglies series and I may have loved it even more??

3.5 stars

I admit to being a tiny bit sceptical before reading this, as I didn't love [b:The Darkest Legacy|37688046|The Darkest Legacy (The Darkest Minds, #4)|Alexandra Bracken|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1522698149s/37688046.jpg|59175846], another book returning to a series and set 10 years later, but Impostors managed to do this successfully.

Part of that success lies in the fact that instead of returning to characters introduced in the previous books, it begins the start of a whole new story with all new characters. Oh sure there are a few plot holes, and the characters are pretty standard, but it is also a fast paced and engaging read. If you liked the previous books set in the Uglies world, you should be satisfied with this. I'm in for the next book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. An oppressive ruler has kept one of his twin daughters out of the spotlight her entire life. Trained to be her sister’s body double, Frey has been educated in combat. When her father looks to form an alliance with another country, he offers his daughter as a hostage to show good will. The daughter he sends, however, is Frey. Caught up in a web of lies and deceit, she finds herself on the run with Col, her hosts’ first-born son. When her father launches a brutal attack, Frey and Col plot to save her sister and fight back against her father. This series starter takes place in the world of the Uglies series, years later, but readers will be fine without reading that series. Recommended for grades 6+.

Super slow start but it got better towards the end

This book takes place after the Uglies series and has a few fun references to the past, but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone series. I enjoyed the mix of ‘period piece court intrigue’ and ‘futuristic sci-fi technology’ with a dystopian feel.
This is an author I will automatically buy new books from and I was not disappointed!
adventurous inspiring mysterious

It has been probably close to two decades since I read the Pretties series but Westerfeld's magnificent writing pulled me right back into his world immediately. Comfortable, engaging, and doesn't let me have the time to formulate what I think is going to happen next because it is already happening. Knew I would love it, and did.
