pros- liked the twist and ending with it
con- took nearly half the book for the plot to pick up and for it to be enjoyable; didn’t like the character being such a drug addict; the writing style wasn’t my fav

As some reviewers before me said, I wanted to like, nay love this book. The concept intrigued me since we so often only see the blood soaked immediate aftermath or the crime-in-progress.
Instead it took me seven weeks of on and off slogging through the text, trying (and mostly failing) to get over the unlikable protagonist with her constant 180° mood and behavior swings that made little sense and the doormat enviroment (boyfriend, mentor figure, reporter) that she trampled through during said moods.
There are also the repeated details that we are told. I know not everyone remembers details well but getting them dumped on you again and again is superflous and, more often then not, annoying.
What I did like about the book (and which saved it from a 1 star review) was the flashbacks to the cabin and the fact that I was left guessing until the end.

One of the worst books I’ve ever read. Quincy is one of the most insufferable main characters I have ever had the displeasure of reading and I spent the whole book hoping she got killed off just so I would have a few moments of peace away from her whining and terrible decisions. She spends the whole book complaining, only broken up by moments of baking and taking Xanax. She doesn’t spend any time trying to solve the mystery until the last 70 pages and she doesn’t even solve it. Every single piece of evidence is hand given to her by other people. What does she do when she gets it? Nothing. She either burns it, which defeats the whole purpose of trying to solve a mystery, or she confronts someone, only then to run away and become a flustered mess over the situation that SHE GOT HERSELF INTO. She puts a man into a coma, cheats on her boyfriend, lies to cops, leaves evidence at a crime scene that can incriminate her, makes wrong accusations every other page, lets a woman who is an identity thief and con artist live with her even though every other page she says how she can’t trust her and wants to kick her out, but then drinks with said con artist and bonds with her just then for the next chapter to find more evidence on how this woman is awful and lying to her, just for her to then bond with her some more while telling us, the reader, how much she can’t trust her. Quincy spends the whole book saying how her life is terrible because of this massacre that happened to her ten years ago, but actually her life is terrible because she is a shitty person who ruins her own life and I hope that she is rotting in book hell.
Also, this is a “mystery” and whodunnit, but with a cast of three and a half people (the half being her boyfriend who is in maybe like twenty pages) it ain’t hard to figure who the killer is. The mystery also doesn’t even start until like the end of the book and it is done and solved in the span of ONE FUCKING CHAPTER. I have never hated a book as much as this one.

borderline unbearable. the main character is straight up badly written and unlikeable. the twists were shitty. the ending made no sense bc the author spent so much time making everyone a suspect in a really boring way.
it’s hard to recommend a different book with the same premise especially when this one came out way before the other one, but it’s just. so bad.

Riley Sager does great job at weaving the story so you suspect multiple people and go back and forth at different parts of the story. But it surprises me each time!!!
