I'ma be real, George telling Lennie he ain't mad and never had been got me. It's famous enough that despite having never read/seen any version of it, I knew basically the entirety of what would happen, but it did still pack an emotional punch. Elmore Leonard and ESPECIALLY Larry McMurtry probably read the shit outta some Steinbeck.

a very good book that describes the dreams that others may want to achieve rather than the American Dream that is not for everyone. As they live in this American Dream ideology, we see the cracks within this dream such as loneliness, fear for different reasons like not being useful anymore. The author offers a very harsh reality where people live in and they can't seem to fight it off with niceness or simply get out of it. John Steinbeck did a really god job pointing out what was wrong with the American Dream. Definitely brings a reflection on the world we live in and the dreams and jobs we want to pursuit, not for the economy of our country but for ourselves and our happiness.
