I enjoyed this, and the length is perfect for someone who wants to find out when Steinbeck is like (East of Eden is just far too long to begin with). The problem with this novel is, I think, how often it’s been used in schools, and how critically I read for that reason. It wasn’t a set text, I hadn’t read it in school, but my brothers had. The end is heartbreaking, if you’ve invested yourself in the novel, but I barely had. Either way, it is well-written, and it was a nice addition to my read list.
