I picked this book up while idly strolling through my library while actually looking for a different book. I knew nothing of the British loyalists who went to Nova Scotia so I thought I'd look into it.
I did not expect a book with such details, sadness, hopefulness, and ultimately contentment to be what I got.
The story of Aminata, stolen from the interior of Africa, enslaved in South Carolina and her subsequent journeys, loves, heartaches, losses and successes were written so clearly that I didn't want to stop reading. Each location, each travel, is vividly brought to life along with the emotions of Aminata's life.
I'm curious to read more about the non-fiction parts of this book. But, I was very happy I picked up this book.

Reading Aminata Diallo’s autobiography reminds me of reading Frederick Douglass earlier this year: stories of horror, atrocity, perseverance, strength, disappointment, hope, and sobering reality that tell us much about the experience of the solace, but even more about the inhumanity of the slave trade and how we were all complicit in its continuing effects. Hill’s notes, acknowledgments, and further reading lists that close the book are well-worth diving into and will serve as fodder for my reading lists to come.

I loved this book. Not only was it a beautiful piece of historical fiction, but I learned something new, which surprised and delighted me.
This was a powerful and deeply engaging novel—Aminata’s story drew me in quickly and never let go. Her dreams for the freedom and home stolen from her resonated with me. What else do we really want, deep in our souls, after all, but the freedom to choose our own destiny and somewhere to be truly at home, with those who truly know us.
