This book was engaging from the very beginning and I could not put it down. The character development, descriptions and plot were all extraordinary and although long it was well-paced. It is impossible not be drawn in by the main character and narrator, Aminata.
A really great read. So much unnecessary sadness and cruelty.
Well written.
Well written.
Fantastic read. While fictional, it seems to capture the experience. Humans are horrible creatures it turns out.

I listened to this book on tape and learned that that is not the best way for me to enjoy a book.
This woman is kidnapped in Africa, brought to America where she is sold. She actually has a good life, as it goes, with one particularly good owner. She is separated from her husband and believes she is betrayed by her owner. Hardships make her wise and strong.
She lives a long life. It is a good view of what it was like to be a slave. There was joy amidst the horror, fear, and incredible unfairness of it.

Important and interesting. Hill evokes the voice of his protagonist with such vision and force it is hard to imagine it wasn't her who wrote it.
This novel tells the story of Aminiata Diallo, an African woman, abducted and sold into slavery at 11. We follow Aminiata's journey through South Carolina's plantations, New York, Nova Scotia, Sierra Leone and, finally, London. This is a fascinating account of the lives of slaves and the strength of one woman. It is a brilliant book.

One of my favourite books so far. Loved it from the beginning to the end and I’m so glad I finally read it after seeing the tv series a long time ago. Aminata will always have my heart.
A 3.5. A compelling story - the pages just flew by. I think I liked[b:The Known World|67|The Known World|Edward P. Jones|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1156872170s/67.jpg|1062798] by Edward P. Jones more - somehow the writing had more depth to it, even though it was a very different look on slavery. Having said that, I loved Aminita's authentic voice - a wonderful character and very capable storyteller.
