Series review
Well, that was a fun series to read! I'd been eyeing Chris Wooding's work for a while and thought I'd start with this series instead of The Ember Blade which is quite a big book. I reckoned it was safer to start with the Tales of the Ketty Jay; ever since Staveley's Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne I'm more hesitant to start big fantasy series from authors I know nothing about.

This is the third time I have finished the Tales of the Ketty Jay, and as soon as I read that last word, I was itching to start all over again. The cast of characters in this series are some of my favorites in all of fiction, and all of their arc's wrapped up so well.
This book concludes the series very well, but that doesn't mean that other aspects of the story suffered. The captivating plot loaded with action continues, and the stakes were the highest in this one. In previous books, the crew of the Ketty Jay were off on their own little adventures, and here they get caught up in a civil war (one that they happened to cause 😅).
One thing that I love about Chris Wooding's storytelling is how he manages to include emotional moments as well as thought provoking themes into stories that are constantly moving and action packed. Similar to the previous three books, this one held my interest the entire way, and I can't think of a single dull moment.
Wooding's writing style isn't "beautiful" by any means as it reads easy, but there is always a sentence or two once in awhile that really stick out. There would be times I do a double take, surprised by a phrase or sentence.
The highlight of this story for me is the characters. If found family is something you enjoy reading about, this series would be for you. All of the characters get satisfying endings and it is a pretty happy ending. Really my only complaint is that it is a bit too much of a happy ending, but that's just me finding something to complain about.
The Ace of Skulls is a fantastic ending to The Tales of the Ketty Jay series, one that remains one of my all time favorites.

Really have enjoyed reading the adventures of the misfits and losers of the crew of the Ketty Jay. Pirates or heroes? You decide.
This was a great last book for the series. It is captivating, fast paced and gbringing every character to their limits and back again. So good after the disappointing Iron Jackal.
Highly recommend the series despite its ups and downs for the characters and adventures.

An excellent end to a good series. Suitably messy finale, with most ends tied up.
Wooding decided to end this series on his terms, and I must say his terms were fantastic. Wooding upped the stakes in this book forcing our beloved characters to make decisions with both global and personal implications. The book delivers a very satisfying ending with the typical humor, action and emotional moments we have come to expect. This series never forgot its roots of humor, piracy, and the value of camaraderie. I wish the tales of Ketty Jay weren't over but am so glad I took the journey with them

Give me more, give me more!!
I swear to god, no pulpy, actiony adventure steampunk series should wrench my heart as hard as the Ketty Jay novels do. This goddamn book had me on the edge of tears several times.
Chris Wooding I implore you, more Ketty Jay. I know it's probably a terrible idea, Ace of Skulls is a fantastic and satisfying conclusion to the series, but I want more anyway.
Please.
I'll do your dishes forever.

Exhaustively enjoyable. There's resolution for everyone in the crew, not all of it good (for them). There are a lot of worrying moments which means that I spent a lot of time being scared for the crew. The civil war among the Vards finally goes all out, Awakeners vs. The Coalition. Honestly I am exhausted from reading it, but in a good way. Having finished the series I would still highly recommend reading it.
So at first I wanted to give this book 5 stars then 3 stars and now I have finally settled for 4 stars.
I loved the action and the banter between the characters. The story was fast paced, funny, and delightfully violent. However, I couldn't care less for the romance, and I believe Jez deserved more. Her story line was the one I was most invested in but it felt like she was put aside and at times even forgotten.
All in all 4 stars.
