I absolutely loved this book. I wish they had a whole series. I'm so sad it's over.

a complicated book, yes.
but it kept me entertained the whole time, and emery and nash’s story felt unique and raw in so many ways
i’m not much of a slow burn lover, but this is an exception

I can’t quite tell if the aim of this book was to insult/confuse the reader or if the author thought they were coming off as wildly intelligent when writing it.

The plot could’ve made for a great revenge, enemies to lovers romance but this was utterly demolished by the language the author had her characters using.

The average person reading this book is not going to understand some of the words the MC uses in this book. You will more than likely be consulting your dictionary whilst reading Devious Lies.

”Anagapesis. Aesthete. Yūgen. Gumusservi. Muttering pretty words that made me happy…”

Besides the odd wording issues, we also have purple prose:

“Virginia wore her blonde hair straightened until it mirrored frayed bamboo skewers kissing the tops of her shoulders.”

I really don’t need overt descriptions like this. I had to google what bamboo skewers looked like, FYI.

Characters

Nash
A bad man on the outside and Jesus Christ resurrected on the inside. That’s what the author keeps telling us anyway.

This man is in his early 30s and has a vendetta against the family that his parents worked for. He wants to see the patriarch fall. And how will he do it? By shunting his blame onto a young woman who was a child at the time when the events took place.

Yeah, stellar guy.

He mistakenly fucks his brother’s best friend and then proceeds to treat her like shit after it:

”Nash grabbed a spare pillow and wiped our cum off his cock with the case, uncaring of the audience or the fact that I laid on that pillow every time I lounged in Reed’s room.”

Lovely.

He likes to talk about how big his dick is..

”Emery needed money like I needed a bigger dick.”

”I spared the guy feelings of inadequacy at the sight of my dick..”

”“I know I inspire your gag reflex. It takes time and experience for women to blow someone my size.”

It’s giving small dick energy.

Emery
Jesus, where to start with this one.

She has some mental issues going on, that should’ve been addressed long ago.

She likes to mutter pretty words that make her feel happy...

She also likes to find meaning in almost everything she sees or hears. Insert purple prose:

”I’d always had an obsessive fascination with storms. They reminded me to breathe, smelled like fresh starts, and were teachers in a world full of lessons.”

This quite literally makes no sense. This girl needs to see a specialist.

Reed
Idk what his purpose is. He’s not much of a friend never mind a best friend. I mean, who dates their best friend’s bully for Christ sake? And this fucker wants to marry said bully!

We need to address the names

Who is out there calling their daughters Basil and Chan-fucking-tilly? Was she named after Chantilly in France??

If this is the calibre of writing Parker S. Huntington produces, I am not sure if I want to read Darling Venom.

I went into this book completely blind. And it exceeded in every way possible!!! I don’t know if this can truly qualify as enemy to lovers more childhood lovers /second chance. The suspense and endless curveballs that are thrown in this book made me never want to put the book down! The way that Nash and Emerly evolve together makes my heart think, “pitter- patter let’s get at her”. Nash has always loved and looked out for Emery. Okay but the fact she didn’t catch on that it was Nash who beat Able’s face in?!! Helllooo. Virginia is the prime example of why females grow up and develop eating disorders and not loving their bodies.
