This was precious! I laughed, I cried, it took me to unexpected places, and I loved every second of it. Highly recommended.

I think I am harsher than I should be with DiCamillo because I enjoy some of her other books so much. This one did not have the spark I like. It felt longer than the 208 pages. I waited for it to improve. Nothing wrong or offensive, but not in the mood right now I guess.

April 2023 - I didn't remember anything about this book except the magician in prison. Willow and I read it at night. She was not very engaged. It wasn't A long read, luckily. We watched the movie a few days later. Um, of course, the book was better and that isn't saying a lot.

A different read. I wonder if I will feel differently about it after I see the movie.

Such a joy to read that I read it all in one sitting. Magical, whimsical, with great depth and creativity. I adored this book. It is written in a simple style accessible to children but also has so much magic in its prose that anyone could enjoy it. The words flow together so nicely and the story unfolds at a very good pace and rhythm. It's very, very well done.

I always wanted to read this book as a kid and never got around to it, so it was a great day when I found a brand new copy at Goodwill for $1.
As a fan of Kate DiCamillo, I had high expectations, and it delivered.
This book is about sad people finding what they always wanted. It's bittersweet and a quick read. Overall a sweet and weel written book.
