the story of young peter in search of his sister, adele. their stories converge on a snowy night thanks to a magician and, yes, his elephant. this is a simple story layered with a heavy dose of wonder and the ability to believe in the unthinkable ("what if?") dicamillo's writing is seemingly simplistic, but laden with truisms. i really loved this book. i felt like i was enveloped in a cloud of awe as i read.

I love DiCamillo's stories. Her way with words is always magical.

The Magician's Elephant is a fairy tale of fulfilled hope, taking responsibility for one's actions, forgiveness and love. You go on a journey akin to walking through a lifting fog. At first you only recognize shadows and the suggestion of shapes. Eventually things become clear and all is understood. Things are kept brief, so you only identify the characters' most basic desires. This one is short and sweet.

A very beautifully written story--I would have loved to listen to this as a bedtime story when I was a kid.

Precious & sweet!

I love little Peter & Adele & the elephant that brought this lovely cast together and eventually led them home & to where they belonged!

I am a huge fan of Kate DiCamillo--I have been since childhood. Although I am no longer a child swept away by the tales Ms. DiCamillo spins, I still love her beautiful writing and her ability to craft meaningful stories. The biggest praise I can give a children's book is to want to read it to my future children, and The Magician's Elephant fits that criteria.

I'm not sure I read any books by Kate DiCamillo growing up, but I have been utterly charmed by her the last couple years as I work my way through her catalog.

From her social media posts, I have found Kate to be a compassionate, thoughtful kindred spirit, who views the world as having sadness and heartache but also with the beauty and redemption that can only be found therein. Such a perspective naturally comes through in her books.

In The Magician's Elephant, young Peter believes himself to be an orphan, learning what it is to be a good soldier. When he discovers he may have a family member still living, hope arises. It is a sweet book filled with fantasy and kindness.
