This was a weird read for me. I was holding my breath nearly the whole time, the love story had me in tears, but there was just something missing I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I understand the author had a lot to cover with nearly the entirety of 20th century Russian history, but it seems a lot of the depth was sacrificed to do so. Some of it seemed skimmed over. Some of the leads to the mystery were false and confusing and it seems as if some loose ends were not tied up to a fault. I loved the folk tale element and the characters were quite strong.

I read this for book club. I liked it well enough. I feel like the author assumes the general public knows more about Russian history than they actually do. More facts and details and less focus on romance would have been better.
