A nonagenarian ex-Bolshevik and a twenty-something cryptography student head to Russia and many secrets are revealed. Captivating multi-generational family drama and history set from just before the 1917 October Revolution until a short time after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I was mostly enthralled by the whole thing, but character development could have been a bit stronger. Good writing with a vivid sense of time and place.

I came in with really high expectations for this and maybe that was the problem. I don’t think there was anything wrong with it per se, it just wasn’t as compelling as I hoped for.
