This book was so captivating from start to finish I couldn’t put it down. I love historical fiction and a book that takes place from 2 perspectives, so this was truly perfect for me.
Half of the story takes place with Rosie in 1991, returning to her homeland of Russia 14 years as the research assistant to a mysterious historian and autobiographer. They’re both looking for people from their past, and they end up being connected to each other.
I loved both stories, which I think is hard to do. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how the stories linked up. I think this is such a beautiful story about love, but more importantly resilience and self-exploration.
I easily could’ve read more of this book to get more answers. My only complaint is I wanted to keep reading. There was a side plot with Rosie and her security guard that I just adored and would’ve loved a little more of. I thought all the twists were incredibly crafted, I just would’ve liked a little more delving into a few of them.

This should be my sweet-spot, Russian historical fiction. However, it was confusing and characters were interchangeable and there was only one twist that the author used repeatedly.

The Last Russian Doll by Kristen Loesch
Read: June 12 — 14 (Book Review Pages: https://www.facebook.com/rewbookreviews OR Instagram: @rewbookreviews)
Russia is an interesting place with a vivid history that we rarely get to learn about that shows the reality of their suffering. Even though this book is a work of fiction, it is based on actual events and timelines that took place. It uses the fall of Russia as its background and it shows the way the Russian people suffered after fighting for their rights. It’s a beautiful weaving of a family’s history that is mysterious and steeped in tragedy, tying in folk lore and fairytales that give this book a deeper meaning. I rate it with 5⭐️ and definitely recommend it to any historical fiction fan!
I loved how this book tells such a wide story focused on the different generations of women in one family. Raisa—or Rosie has just lost her mother, who she never understood because after tragedy struck their family when she was a young girl, her mother just drank away her sorrows and became obsessed with the fairytales of her childhood. Rosie decides she needs answers and goes back to Russia discovering more about her family and herself than she ever dreamed possible. At the heart of this story, there are two more POVs set even further in the past and their love story interweaves with Rosie’s in a way that makes this book impossible to put down. You just have to figure out how and why these characters are so pivotal, not to mention, you fall in love with them too.
The time frame of this book spans from the 1917’s to early 1990’s and is full of history that most people probably don’t know about. I learned so much more about the background of the Bolsheviks, the aftermath of Tsar Nicholas II’s abdication and murder, all the way up to fall of the Soviet Union. It was fascinating! It reminded me of the few books I’ve read where you have a new perspective that shows how others lived and how those types of books teach you history’s darker sides that are lost to time due to so many being afraid to tell it.
Anyway, I definitely loved this incredible book and think if you love historical fiction or are interested in Russia, you should check this book out! It’s well worth it!
