I really enjoyed the story, it’s a good start for the series. The thing that I felt was off, and because I didn’t know this is a spinoff, was when characters and events were mentioned but were not elaborated on. Aside from certain mentions here and there, I was still able to enjoy the overall story.
Nicolas is a reformed bad boy, apparently, he was a bad bad boy in the other books, who is now trying to shed that reputation and show people, *cough* Lauren *cough*, that his past isn’t who he now is and wants to be.
The Deschanels are a well-known, powerful coven that have deep roots in New Orleans. Nicolas is the heir to the Deschanel dynasty and with his new take on life, he’s trying to be deserving of that. The Deschanels are filthy rich and with that money, they can afford to do research on other magical communities and even make contact with those communities. That’s what Lauren and Nic oversee. The run the logistics for the teams out in the world that make those contacts.
There’s a “competing” coven in NO, the LaViolette coven, that Nic and Lauren start to research. In their search, they step on some toes that lead to some bad consequences, which also affects the team in Paris, Charlotte and Julian. This arc of the story becomes the big continuing theme for the rest of the series.
This story is urban fantasy and very different from any previous witch-y books that I’ve read. Most tend to be full on fantasy or are vampire themed! Nicolas dug his way into my heart and I absolutely love him. The fact that the notorious bad boy is trying to be better and keeps showing all those who doubt that he CAN be better is so damn satisfying.
The book ends on a bit of cliffhanger and with a HUGE reveal but it’s not that bad since book 2 & 3 are available!
I recommend this series and once I go back and read the original series, I might love this spinoff series even more.
