What a cute and fun story. The characters are extremely endearing and lovable and the whole story is engaging, despite not being especially deep. The world-building is fairly superficial and the names are oftentimes very silly, same as the situations the cast finds themselves in. Though very tropey, the plot wasn't always 100% predictable and done in a very fun way that kept me wanting to go on. Especially in the beginning, this read like a written version of a D&D campaign, only that it became more planned out and crafted over time. The world and people are vibrant and present and ultimately I had a great time with this book. I would definitely read a sequel.

Objectively this is not a good book. There is not a coherent plot at all.
But rating this things solely based on my enjoyment, this gets more than infinity stars. It tells the struggles of a chosen one who has no idea what to do after he completes the prophecy while handling his feelings towards his best friend. The way every single plan to woo his friends fail and he just ends up with Matt was so funny i almost died laughing.

ooohh i loved this so much. i had started it a couple of months ago, stopped reading it because i had exams and didn't have time to read for fun and i picked it up again a few days ago out of boredom and wanting to read something romantic and queer. so i remembered this lovely peace of literature. and i picked it up right where i left off. and from there it was just smooth sailing. because it was just as fun and funny as it was the way i left it and maybe even more because of the way events unfold after the 50% mark. genuinely such a fun experience, reading this book. hilarious banter, sarcasm at its finest and lovable diverse characters.

arek just might be my spirit animal, he is so funny. matt is so goat-ed because i said so. matt and arek are just soulmates, end of sentence. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH YOUR HONOUR. and just their group of misfits and outcasts is my second crows and i love my crows.
the writing is so smooth and it gives you such an amazing ease into the fantasy world and its characters. and it was so funny too.

also can we take a moment to say and appreciate how incredible this book and F.T. Lukens is/are because 1) they wrote a romantic book in a fantasy setting (which is one of my favorites to read); 2) they wrote a queer romance and 3) they wrote a queer romance in a romantic book set in a fantasy world. like HOW AMAZING AND COOL IS THAT? very. and id probably need more book recs of this niche genre after this review is done.

in conclusion, i had such a good time reading this incredible book and id like a second one just like it, doesn't matter if its just copy&paste, id still eat it up.
