The start of this book is going to feel very familiar to anyone who's watched fantasy anime in the last decade. A man awakens in the body of a dark lord with no memory and tries to fake it. It's not the body swap/isekai story of anime, rather an amnesia one. The amnesia thing annoyed me for the first third, before Gav stops being such a blank slate.

The story is comedic and dark, hitting a lot of the beats you'd expect from a "dark lord turns good" story. There's slapstick and horrific magical torture back to back. I liked a lot of the side characters much more than Gav himself. He's a bundle of confusion, self loathing, and cowardice.

Sometimes you just need something fun and light, and my favorite flavor of that is definitely this variety of rather kooky spin on classic fantasy concepts.

+ Fun fantasy novel, the characters don’t feel hollow or one dimensional
- some areas could have been edited or rewritten but overall pretty good

Terry Pratchett/Princess Bride level humor and reflection. A delectable listen with inclusive ideology and efforts. The whole package. Great resolution and denouement, too.

I was a little apprehensive going into this. Based on the premise I was hoping for a very specific tone, and the last time I had that combination it didn't work out *cough*How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying*cough*

This however was delightful. It was the perfect mix of campy and melodramatic, and met my tone expectations perfectly.

Orla and Grrribeetle and all the goblins were such fun characters.

I would have loved to see an epilogue however I'm happy enough with the way it ended anyways.

This was a book club pick and I gotta say, I really liked it! Gave was a fun character, as he changed over the book. The names are pretty crazy, but I liked the goblins and the garlic festival.
