Would have been entertaining if the main character didn’t sexualize every woman in the story. I was tired of hearing about all the erections and breasts pressing against him by the end. There was also a very tasteless and harmful comment the main character makes about a character’s appearance offhand that knocked the rating even further down for me. He arrived at someone’s house and says the door was answered by
a “plump, round faced woman” who had developed a good personality “because the alternative was suicide.”
I had to rewind a couple times to make sure I heard it right.
The audiobook narrator was really talented, otherwise I might not have finished the book.

From what I know of this author, he’s a white liberal who is trying to write non-white characters and bring that to his (mostly white) audience, which can have value. However, sentences like the following, not followed by some addressing of the larger issue, are damaging and problematic and this is going to be a DNF book and series for me

“I suddenly had a horrible thought. What if they were thinking of sending me to Trident? That was the operational command unit charged with tackling gun crime within the Black community. Trident was always on the lookout for Black officers to do hideously dangerous undercover work, and being mixed race meant that I qualified. It’s not that I don’t think they do a worthwhile job, it’s just that I didn’t think I’d be very good at it.”

I really liked the premise and was interested in the characters, but I got sick of the main character's obsession with sex- he sounded like a 14 year old going through puberty who was suddenly unable to look at anything but tits. I tried to look past it but it was every interaction he had with any woman- exhausting and weird.

I see a lot of comparisons to the Dresden Files, which I cannot provide, being unfamiliar with them. To me this feels something like Jasper Fforde was told to write a Discworld Watch novel but set it in London and include magic and copious historical details. I like it! (especially as someone who has feelings about a totally different river in an entirely different part of the world)

I can, however, definitely see how people could be annoyed by Grant's tendency to be sexually attracted to women at relatively inappropriate times (there's definitely sexism, though I'd stop short of saying the book expresses a notable level of hatred towards women, aside perhaps from the historical Punch & Judy story) and I expect people with only slightly less tolerance for historical details or technobabble might get bored here.
