If ever a story needed a glossary, or footnotes, or BOTH, this is that story. The flurry of police acronyms sent me to the Metropolitan Police website to find out what the heck was being referred to, and I started keeping a file of the ones I needed to look up.

It was a good intro to the world, Peter could do with some maturity and common sense, and I'm interested in the backstory for Nightingale and Molly. But please, for the love of reading, give me a glossary!

Really fast-paced, interesting read. The protagonist Peter was a compelling, not overly competent character, but curious, examining and following things to their resolution. The narration was flip and light-hearted which worked well for me.

One point of contention with the pacing for me was the point at which
Nightingale gets shot, and then Peter goes to the opera house(?) to confront the villain.
This scene felt oddly out of place and slowed down the momentum of the case, and with Peter not really having any agency (or at least being frustratingly ineffective, and then not at all feeling any urgency at his ineffectual actions), it seemed like the scene was there just to reveal some expository information, lacking in a sense of urgency that was warranted by the situation.

Also it's my personal belief that the word breasts has very limited functionality in normal narrative prose, unless the scene being described is an intimate scene. But each to their own.
