The first great short story by Lovecraft. It’s bite sized but accomplishes everything Lovecraftian horror is known for. Show this to your friends if you’re introducing them to the author.

If you know of his fascist inclinations and xenophobic sentiments... That short story could easily be analyzed in relation to that. How repulsed he felt towards the unknown, how disgusted he felt imagining people of other countries and races having agency, culture, religion and being allowed to exist close to him. A fantastic read all together.
BUT ALSO, props to how perfectly he described soldiers' addictions to heroine while dealing with traumatic events and PTSD(he was never in the military to know of that issue so profoundly as he did)
