This is a prequel to Saving Ruby King, showcasing the life of Ruby’s grandmother. Sara goes through a tumultuous life, from beginning to end. We meet her when she is a resident of the boarding house run by Ms. Sugar, a commune so to speak for black residents since even during the 1960’s - black residents in Chicago and Memphis reliable housing could be a challenge to find. Sara is raising her son Lebanon and encounters a teacher by the name of Jonas who she falls for. Unfortunately, there is a lot of sadness post meeting Jonas and I wish the story was as bleak as it turned out to be. Still a thought provoking read but there a minimal amount of happy, smiling moments.
Minor: Death and Pregnancy
