I read this for a preschool storytime with the theme "Whale of a Tale" and this book fit perfectly. The text is simple but has many layers, and the illustrations are some of the most gorgeous I've ever seen in a picture book. A boy falls asleep after building a makeshift boat to feel closer to his late grandfather and dreams he sails out to where the ocean meets the sky. It's really a fantastic work of art which invokes wonder and awe.
The story by Terry Fan was wonderful. The illustration by Eric Fan was magical. What a way to share the imagination of a young boy thinking about his grandparent.
A beautiful imaginative picture book about a boy's oceanic adventure in honor of his late grandfather.
The illustrations are amazing and help transform readers into a unique world. I absolutely loved this story and recommend it for all young readers. ❤️

I’ve been going through some of the children’s books I have listed here at my local library. Shout out to The Free Library of Philadelphia!!! And their non judgement of a grown woman sitting at a children’s table reading children’s books.
So sad everything is closed due to coronapocalypse.
I digress...I collect beautifully illustrated (yes that’s subjective) children’s books. This is one I would consider that fits into this category and goes into my want-to-buy shelf.

Terry and Eric Fan have created a magical children's picture book, Ocean Meets Sky, taking turns advancing the narrative, at times letting the words propel the story, and at other times, leaving it to the amazing illustrations to lead us further into Finn's tale. Finn, who deeply misses his late grandfather, remembers the story Grandfather told of a place where "ocean meets sky" and decides to build a ship and navigate it alone on their long-planned journey to find such a place. Once Finn's travels are underway, he encounters many fantastical creatures and places in his dream-like quest. This sweet story touches on elements of grief and honoring the deceased, dreams, imagination, and adventure.

The middle spread, with the text, "And crossed a sea of moon jellies dancing." is hands-down one of the most gorgeous illustrations I have ever seen. Ever. I got tears in my eyes when I turned the page and saw it.
Good for sharing with a child who appreciate contemplating pictures and or abstract thoughts, is grieving the death of a grandparent, or really, really likes sea creatures and/or boats. So freakin' gorgeous.

Absolutely gorgeous book about a little boy remembering stories his late grandfather told him about where the ocean meets the sky. My child and I were both enraptured.
This is on my Caldecott shortlist for the year.
