More in vein of the first book. Not bad, but a bit too world-build-y epic for my taste, wasn’t that pulled in.

If I could give 3.5 stars that would be my true rating I think. The Farthest Shore is not as good as Tombs of Atuan, but certainly on par with A Wizard of Earthsea. This book definitely has its highs and there were times where I couldn't put it down, but I also find Arren to be so incredibly annoying, and when someone puts 50p in him he just winds me up beyond belief

I liked the overarching idea of this book, with the triumph that is required being to defeat one's own fear of death, similar to the struggle in the first book, where the struggle was to overcome the darkness in one's self.

A little easy to see where they were going with the kingmaking, but it is made for adolescents, so perhaps it's really not as obvious as it seems to me.

A great continuation of the series, although I was disappointed not to hear more about Tenar.

“To refuse death is to refuse life.”

The World of Earthsea is losing its splendour. The magical abilities that defined the archipelago have been on decline over the North and West. The Prince of Enlad (Arren) visits the Archmage of Roke - Sparrowhawk with the impending doom.

Ged has accumulated more remarkable tales since the events in Tombs of Atuan. Years of experience have brought wisdom and maturity that reflects the position. After the Masters of Roke get together to discuss the phenomenon, the archmage takes it upon himself to investigate the incident and asks Arren to accompany him.

From a structural standpoint, the novel is much closer to the Wizard of Earthsea, though thankfully there is not as much “island hopping”. Le Guin spends a lot of time building the relationship between the two characters, though I felt that Arren didn’t have the internal conflict or heft of a character like Tenar from Tombs of Atuan.

Though there are moments in the novel where Le Guin’s writing and world building just takes off. One of my favourite chapters of the book and perhaps the series is called ‘The Children of the Open Sea’, where Ged and Arren are rescued by the raftpeople, an unknown tribe further south of the Southern Reach. At this point in the novel, everywhere Ged and Arren turn they are spurned or viewed with suspicion that it was really cathartic to find people with good intentions. Like finding an oasis in the desert called open sea, but also in the desert devoid of kindness.

The larger threat that is behind the waning of the magic and its resolution is perhaps a bit convenient. We get very little to know about Cob and what drove a wizard to such madness and why he was so vindictive to members of his own order.

But regardless, The Farthest Shore is a wonderful addition to The Deed of Ged. Somewhere I felt that this book was a bookend for Le Guin’s primary vessel to Earthsea. I might need to read other novels to see if the Ged makes any subsequent appearances but if he doesn’t. I wouldn’t complain.
