this was thematically rich and interesting, and i loved the characters (arren was so fun and i loved his relationship with ged) but the pacing did make this one a struggle to get through.

Truthfully, I struggled with a good 2/3 of the book. It felt slow and although I could see where we were going, it felt like an extremely long journey to get there.
But once we got there, I was hooked. The entire climax of this book is incredible. K. le Guin’s message is definitely heavy handed in comparison to the previous two books, but she delivers it in such beautiful prose that I can’t be upset. Once again, her afterword made everything click into place for me and, truthfully, is worth reading on its own.
I’ve loved every book in the Earthsea series so far and while book three is different from the previous two, I love it all the same.

What can you say about Ursula K. Le Guin other than she was truly great. I really enjoyed this book BUT I am looking forward to the fourth book even more, which I can already tell is going to be a 5 star read!!!!!

Such a monumental story that reminds me that life is worth living!!
With this book, I completed a revisit to the original Earthsea trilogy. There is still power in this creation that much of other fantasy now lacks for me. While the series has its weaknesses, it also carries tragic and metaphysical, epic qualities that sets it apart from most "young adult fantasy", older as well as more contemporary works. (One only needs to think about the treatment of "boy wizard" trope, and the comparisons to books like C.S. Lewis's "The Magician's Nephew", or J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. - Le Guin herself once unfavourably commented on the latter's "derivative" qualities, and how the series also was "ethically rather mean-spirited".) - There is also a deeper sadness underlying the Earthsea books, carrying resonances about growing into awareness about one's mortality, limits of power, and about the loss of original sense of wonder - which is at the heart of all true fantasy.
