This book was pretty good. It was a fun sci-fi read, and definitely unique. Khemri is an interesting character, and I loved how he found his humanity and overcame wanting totalitarian power to finding love.

An unusual read for me, but one that I enjoyed thoroughly. I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Garth Nix's work, though as with all his books the only thing that joins them is his fantastic story telling. I would also recommend it to anyone who is at least interested in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre, and probably anyone else who isn't vehemently against it.

I really enjoyed this book. I was captivated by Prince Khemri's story and couldn't put the book down. The author gives the impression that there is much more to the galaxy explored by the prince in his journey to escape assassination and attempt to win the role as Emperor. Even more interesting is the fact that there are a thousand other princes all attempting to do the same thing, and we only meet a handful of them. Where most authors would drag a story like this out into a trilogy or even a whole series of books, Garth Nix is able to tell this story as a single volume, keeping the tone exciting and mysterious, and making enormously satisfying to turn the last page.

I enjoyed the world building more than the actual plot in this one, and found price Khemri rather full of himself.

I really liked this book! A very enjoyable story of an empire, a prince, and his journey to his humanity.

It takes forever for the book to move from set-up to present action. Once it does, it turns into a fairly conventional adventure story. Not much in the way of character development or intellectual questioning, but fast-paced travels and fights kept me reading. Far less interesting than Nix's ABHORSEN trilogy.
