I have mixed feelings on this book. Of course I love Jacks and wish that him and Evangeline belonged together (clearly she does too) but he’s just SUCH an ass to her and she deserves better. (But I still want her to be with Jacks). I just wish she didn’t have to chase him like a love-sick puppy for the entirety of the book.

Definitely better during the second half of the book.

It was kind of perfect? Evangeline was still annoyingly optimistic, but I guess I got used to it. The chemistry between Eva & Jacks really picked up and after Caraval I found myself asking Donatella who? The ending was pernicious and yet, perfect. Really builds you up for the final installment of this series.
Getting to learn more about Jacks' back story and the darker themes made this book far surpass the last one.

yeah ngl i ate this entirely the fuck up. idk what it is about rereading this series but they are so much fun and so magically immersive that i cannot help but love them. i truly appreciate what stephanie garber has done with this series and her ability to lean into tropes and write compelling angst is much more evident to me now. your enjoyment of this series is heavily based on your expectations and knowing what i was getting into on a reread is making these amazing! i think more light hearted whimsical ya works better for me than other fantasy books in this genre

these books are so bad but i refuse to sit here and say i didn’t gobble them up. i read book two in two sittings and i had so much fun. the ending was completely unhinged. this series is just ridiculous and quite literally nothing makes sense but they would not be fun if they did. these have been the best popcorn reads and i will be reading book 3 because i am trash.

Fine YA fantasy, FMC is an actual stain on the “magnificent north” but I’m cruising through them so??? Three stars seems fair

I solid 4 ✨️ I anticipated a cliffhanger, and I'm honestly hoping for an anti-HEA with the third and final installment
