I didn’t realize this was second in a series, but even so, I find the debate over whether a girl should be forced to marry or not not very original, and the characters fairly one dimensional.

It’s been a while since I first read the Miniaturist so i’ll admit my opinion on the House of Fortune may have been slightly different had I read them back to back. However, this new book was a treat to read and I had so much fun traveling back into the world of the Oortmans and Brandts. There were a few details which I thought weren’t established/ironed out as neatly as they maybe could have been (like the identity of the golden house unless I missed something) but other than that I thought it was a really nicely woven story and gave much closure that the first book warranted. Super happy that this was my first read of 2023!!
