Mayhaps my favorite book I’ve read this year?

I devoured this, and while I liked it overall, there were moments where I wondered if it was actually good, or if I wanted an easy read where I could simply ignore the plot holes and blame it on the characters’ naivety.

Our main character is a witch in hiding pretending to be a vapid socialite by day, but is a vigilante known as the Crimson Moth who rescues witches from being purged by night. And our MMC is a witch hunter looking for the Crimson Moth and they both end up fake courting each other for information. I really liked this and I want to know how they are going to get over their literal divide in the next book.

This book was my first step into the world of morally grey love interests and my first witch/witch hunter fantasy read!!

I went into reading this book with high expectations as it was recommended to me by my sister! It still surpassed my expectations.

I was impressed by the world building, writing quality and my immersion in the plot - to be fair, I feel like I'm quite easy to hook in. I'm a critic on authors writing styles, and Ciccarelli did not disappoint!

Rune was such a strong main female character, her back story was diabolically sad and I felt so bad for her the entire book. Despite her horrible past, she is still incredibly strong and such a powerful character. Her magic powers were amazing to witness throughout the book and the descriptions of magic were so immersive. Her passion for fashion was nice to hear about as well, and I just about died when Gideon sketched AND made her dress.

LETS TALK ABOUT GIDEON SHARPE. Apart from his hidden agenda (which Rune also had a hidden agenda - so do they cancel out...two wrongs make a right?), his chapters were just heart wrenching to read. It's obvious his disdain for witches stem from Cressida (which, by the way, fuck you Cressida).

I could feel the inner turmoil of him juggling his hatred for witches while also having his feelings grow for Rune into something more (AND the fact that his younger brother Alex was in love with Rune).

AND HOLD ON, WHY DID THEY DO ALEX SO WRONG LIKE THAT, god.

The cliffhanger ending after Alex died was just enough for me to yearn for more. The sequel, The Rebel Witch, is up next on my TBR.

Every scene with just Gideon and Rune had me SO STRESSED FOR THE BOTH OF THEM. That they were both going to be found out. THE SCENE OF GIDEON CONFRONTING RUNE - that destroyed me (just like it destroyed him). I was rooting for the both of them but not at the same time, Ciccarelli does a great job of getting the reader to sympathise with Gideon and Rune.

And the romantic scenes between them were so good. But every time Gideon would mention it to Harrow as just another ploy to check whether she had any scars - brother, just say you wanted to see her naked. Anyway, I didn't love that aspect of it (but that's just the hopeless romantic in me).

The last fantasy book I read was Bride by Ali Hazelwood and this is definitely on-par with that! I'm excited to read the next book and am hoping to see more releases from Ciccarelli!

I wanted to like this more than I did.

It had it's entertaining moments and I absolutely understand the appeal.

The enemies to lovers claim is ridiculous - they have the hots for each other from the get.

I also hate love triangle 99% of the time.

Also I'm so confused. Why are we using candles all the time if there are light switches?

3.5 ⭐️ was a fine enough read, felt slow until the end
