I'm so sorry but did I read the same book as everyone else? This plot was so full of holes and nothing the characters did made any sense. The vibe was cozy and the chapters were short, so I mean I did enjoy it enough to keep reading, but WELL.

Both characters were so extremely naive and unintelligent which was so disappointing when the whole premise was that the FMC was supposed to be this extremely intelligent plotting witch outwitting the captain, who himself was supposed to be the most ruthless clever witch hunter. And they both fell into the most obvious traps and repeatedly trusting people blindly even though they themself wonder if they are maybe lying.

Their love was not at all giving "enemies to lovers", more like insta-love where they instantly liked each other and their reason for disliking each other before didn't even make sense.

Anyways I'm still reading the 2nd because I'm committed and already paid for it.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5

This book is young adult fantasy at its finest. I really appreciate a book that is fast paced and quick, but also doesn’t lack any world building and character development. I was fully immersed in the world and the politics right off the bat.

I tend to love any book that involves witches as characters as they are so fun to be around. The atmosphere that can be created in a story with spells and magic is unbeaten in my opinion and Kristen Ciccarelli definitely hit the mark.

Rune was your typical brave, strong and sassy FMC and I loved her for that. She has gone through so much in her life that I couldn't help but root for her. Because of this, it took me a little while to warm up to Gideon, as by nature he is very anti-witch. The relationship didn’t wow me, I was definitely more interested in the plot line and the reveals that I knew were coming. Saying that, I did think Rune and Gideon were well matched - both having lived through various trauma and learning to love again.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed The Crimson Moth - the pacing was good, the world intriguing and I adore Rune as a main character. Very excited to continue and complete the duology.

So… how long do I have to wait for book 2? I felt like the author’s pacing was pretty perfect, and I enjoyed how there were things I was able to predict and then a few things I got wrong. Obviously the ending has me in a chokehold and I’m going to need a moment to process my emotions.
