I considered DNFing this at 75% because it took a turn I absolutely hated. I had loved the direction it was heading and then it did something unforgivable in my opinion. I want to finish the series which is why I continued but I could not get past it the moment and enjoy the last quarter of the book.

As always, truly superb writing.

This novel is a significant change from the previous four. Kellen doesn't just come of age, he finds that he has to grow up really, really quickly.

The subject matter is a great deal darker and more sinister than previously written, with complex and wholly credible plots and counterplots righ up to the penultimate chapter.

The first book in this series I really enjoyed but as I read each book the plots are getting more and more predictable. I felt like Kellen never really gets punished for the things he does; for example, when Kellen murders Koresh and Arrasia there's no real consequences. Saying that, I did enjoy some parts of the book so I am giving it 2.75/5 round up to 3.

I'm not sure what happened behind the scenes, but this one really didn't do it for me. I expected a fun ride like the other four, but that didn't seem to be what this book was interested in. And at first that was alright, not every book needs to be a daring adventure, but the plot felt like worrying a sore tooth with your tongue for ten hours. I saw it through hoping that by the end this would all be justified by a late-game turn, but for me none of that really played out.

I've read reviews of the next book saying that there's a similar feeling for those who were unsatisfied with this one, so unfortunately I'll be leaving that one unread for the foreseeable future. I'm very sad, because finishing these two books was something I was pretty excited about. Ah well, thankful for four books I thoroughly enjoyed.
