Most history of the United States is the history of "great men." What gets left out of the narrative are the untold stories of the people fighting for what's right, refusing to give up until the "great men" finally get on board and take action (and then the credit for doing the right thing). To fully understand the history of this country you must understand the history of the people: the women, Native Americans, African Americans, factory workers, and the working poor.
Simply put, you need to read this book. Now.

While I do appreciate Zinn’s approach to viewing history through the eyes of the common folk of America, this book was just too intertwined with his personal beliefs. In the very beginning of the book, Zinn makes the statement that he is attempting to be as neutral and unbiased as possible. By the end of the book, he admits that it’s impossible for a historian to be neutral. Nevertheless, I did find some of of the writings to be completely new information to me and gave me a chance to reflect on movements and other historical events that I had not fully appreciated.

Dense but very informative. It should be read by every American. Zinn follows history through the eyes of the people. The people meaning those not in power.
I learned so much reading this. I also wanted to throw it across the room sometimes because oof.... The US is.... rough.
Anyway. Read it. Learn. It's worth it.

This book took me awhile to get through but is one of the most influential books I think I’ve ever read. As an American there is definitely a national fervor for America, and this is reflected in our media, society, and education. This is the first I’ve seen of the underside of American, particularly the people who do the not glorious work and make our country run. The people are the embodiment of America and Zinn did a wonderful job acknowledging those who would have been forgotten. Amazing book and should be read by every American
