okay i was ready to not like this book but honestly this actually hit with me. like this touched on a lot of very heavy things in terms of like finding your footing without school as a Real Adult, feeling like everyone else has it together, sexism and misogyny and also the anxiety of feeling like everyone hates you or is out to get you. and the metaphor of the crack underlying everything and being an ever present thing and sophie essentially persevering in spite of all the cracks in her life is soooo chefs kiss. also i know ppl felt she was one dimensional bc of all the talk of her checking her social media but are we not all victims of that rn... all we do is scroll thru our stupid lil apps... guys. the thing is. it's actually Very Serious but also not at all serious!

This was an odd little piece of fiction. Not sure how I feel about the topics discussed and the overall plot events that happened

This book was heartbreaking, funny, bittersweet and a real honest look at what it's like to be lonely as a young woman.

The feeling that nothing and everything is real, that it's all a performance and yet it is still somehow your life.

The horrific traumas we bring with us as young women and the feeling of helplessness as you navigate the mess that is dating, relationships and family.

How hard it is to have unrequited feelings and also how hard it is to see the slow breakdown of friendships that once burned bright and now are nothing more than a like on a photo, through the lense of social media.

Also coming to terms with that, and taking control, of making the effort and choosing to be present.

It’s nice to read a book written by someone who actually seems to use social media and shows our “chronically online” behaviours and our “better than you” feeling when we decide to remove the apps (only to return).
While I don’t think I’ll read it again, I did like the book up to a certain point. I could relate to the main character’s feelings: the one of feeling like everyone secretly doesn’t like you, feeling like you’re not living how you want but how someone else wants and being confronted to the current job market.

The fact that Sophie technically doesn’t speak - we only hear her thoughts in response to people talking - is an interesting stylistic choice though became a little tiring because we never hear her voice. We just hear the self deprecating and miserable monologue that goes on in her head 24/7. I say this despite relating to it at certain points as I feel like I’m too much in my head during social events instead of interacting with people directly.

i related to the mc’s internal beliefs so much and i wonder if other people find her and thus me and irritating character… there were so many lightbulb “i’ve thought the exact same thing” moments. the whole crack thing was a little confusing, i get it showed uncertainty but it didn’t seem like there was much point to it - maybe that was the point. at times it did feel like a wannabe self help book, took me out of the book everytime but jesus if she wasn’t out through the ringer, everything that happened is so so awful and yet it’s so common and realistic. makes me want to psychoanalyse the entire book
