ocean vuong has done it again! this is a piercing collection of poetry. the connection made between survival as a creative act resonates with me so so deeply. i finished time is a mother a month ago but i’m still thinking about it. thank you, ocean vuong, for your beautiful, profound words! 🖤

truthfully, i didn't love most of the poems in this collection but "amazon history of a former nail salon worker" made me want to leave work early. i will never recover. i'm honestly about to go into the bathroom to weep all over again just thinking about the bulk purchase of zebra cakes and the snoopy card and the "chemo glam" head scarf and the wool socks bought for a winter that wasn't going to come. bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

very quietly world-shattering. “amazon history of a former nail salon worker” made me burst into tears the first time i read it. i listened to vuong on the radio talking about this collection and he spoke so beautifully that i immediately went out and bought it even though at the time i’d never read any of his work before. the excerpt from “beautiful short loser” had a profound impact on me,

“i know. i know the room you’ve been crying in is called america. i know the door is not invented yet.”

vuong just says so much in so few words that it is astounding. i also loved “nothing” and thought it was a beautiful, deeply intimate poem. the entire collection was trembling and aching and still but never static. made of snow and sunlight and utterly stretched.

time is a mother is a reflective book of poems on grief, identity, time, and violence, w/ my fav being the brilliant "not even." the poems are raw, intermittently punctured w/ unusual imagery and turns of phrase tinged with death and the body, startling in their honesty and originality, though they can be a lil confusing at times.
