I loved these books growing up. It really helped feed my love of fantasy and link it back to coming of age in a way I hadn't enjoyed previously. It had some problematic elements and wasn't the best written, but it inspired and was somewhat a relic of its time. Unfortunately its become more apparent that the author was simply going with the times and making mistakes after she doubled down on rhetoric that harms children. I love who these books helped me become, but I've also grown beyond them.

In any case I don't believe in an 100% death-of-the-author stance and this series simply does not deserve so high a rating as I once had given it. This is due in some part to the sheer hypocrisy of its positive messaging. Like it or not, the still-living author has sullied what was once good about this series. But I do draw some positivity and hope from all this that other works will deliver on and far exceed what this series promised.
