I wanted to like this book but I could not get over the names being taken directly from Les Miserables and being imported into this setting and plot. I understood the time skipping as it does in the actual Les MIserables novel but it felt rushed and unnatural in this context. The historical inaccuracies confused me as to whether this was supposed to be an actual historical novel or an alternative timeline of sorts. In the end, I was wholly underwhelmed by this book.

Surprised that I really enjoyed this one.

Ah this book! I loved the plot and the whole set up of the story. It had all the Les mis vibes coupled with the six of crows (which is one of my fav books) so this was bound to be a hit.

Sometimes it can be a little difficult to get into a new fantasy and coming to grips with a whole new world and the rules of their universes but this one was an instant easy slip into. It had all the hallmarks of a great fantasy novel and is setting itself up to be a great series.

I loved all the characters and I had so much respect for Nina. She was a great main character and her story was great. From the start I immediately got behind it and the whole book flew by. I’m glad there’s more in the series because I’m so not ready to leave it there!

This book was wonderful!! It definitely reminded me of Six of Crows and I am always in the mood for books like this. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This is everything I want in a book. Action packed and vivid, Kester Grant wove a story of historical fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish and I can’t say that I found any of this to be lacking.
Yes, this is a YA, but it was great.

Dnf at 57%, this book was just not for me / bad timing to get into it
