Wauw! Prachtig vakantieboek.

Amazing. The novel weaves beautifully the themes of love, survival and friendship, all while showing how prejudice can ruin a person. Owens paints a vivid imagery of the marsh and life surrounding it. All around, a wholesome book.

Eins der besten Bücher, das ich je gelesen hab!! Konnte es nicht mehr weg legen!

Breathtaking. Beautifully written. Haunting. Movie already in the making.

One of those books that I wished I could forget it immediately and read it again.

My reaction to this book:

First line: "The morning burned so August-hot, the marsh's moist breath hung the oaks and the pines with fog."

What a unique story. I didn’t really know what I was getting into when I started Where the Crawdads Sing. All I really knew was that everyone was loving it, and now I understand why!

“She knew the years of isolation had altered her behaviour until she was different from others, but it wasn't her fault she'd been alone. Most of what she knew, she'd learned from the wild. Nature had nurtured, tutored, and protected her when no one else would.”

We begin with young Kya on the day her mother leaves their little marsh shack. Followed by her siblings, Kya is left alone with her drunk, abusive father who sobers up enough for her to form a connection with, before ultimately drinking again and eventually leaving.

Kya is now 7 and living alone in the marsh.

What follows is a coming of age story where we join Kya as she grows up in the marsh and learns to survive on her own, interspersed with the murder mystery of one of the most popular boys in town.

As Kya grows in age so does her love and understanding of the marsh lands. The animals become her friends and the trees become her protectors, and her heart is full. But as she grows so does her loneliness and when her efforts to open her heart end in disasters Kya strengthens her barriers and focuses on her one reliable companion, the marsh. After all, everyone else leaves her.

“Please don't talk to me about isolation. No one has to tell me how it changes a person. I have lived it. I am isolation," Kya whispered with a slight edge.”

Where the Crawdads Sing is full of lush language and beautiful descriptions of the landscape and relationships between Kya and those around her.

Although most people in the town detest the dirty, wild Marsh Girl, Kya does make strong bonds with some and even has silent supporters in others. They help her to survive and all love her in their own way. There is even some romance involved and all the love and angst that comes along with star eyed teenagers.

“Let’s face it, a lot of times love doesn’t work out. Yet even when it fails, it connects you to others and, in the end, that is all you have, the connections.”

Kya becomes a wonderful person, utterly self-reliant, alone but still willing to love others, and self-educated beyond expectations. It is a joyous adventure.

However, it did take a while for me to really be sucked into the story and to reach that “nothing can stop me from finishing this right now” feeling. I enjoyed reading about Kya growing up and learning to do things on her own and it was truly remarkable how she learned to adapt, survive and endure the loneliness of being utterly deserted by everyone she loved. Though I did wonder where we were going with the story, 10 years pass and although love interests come and go, it’s still just Kya. When the murder mystery part of the story starts to pick up, that’s when Where the Crawdads Sing really gripped me. I couldn’t put it down, had to know what was going to happen and I must say, I was not disappointed.

“Faces change with life's toll, but eyes remain a window to what was...”

Where the Crawdads Sing is certainly unique and a wonderful read. You’ll get lost in the marsh that Kya calls home and be rooting for her all the way through!
